Tay Somers is an interdisciplinary artist who specializes in watercolor and experiments with an ever-growing variety of mediums. Tay was born with several vision disabilities which causes her to have low vision. Despite these challenges, Tay has always had an affinity for visual arts that never waned even when her vision declined further in late adolescence. Tay completed an Associate’s degree in arts and sciences in 2021 at Bellevue College. While there, she was mentored by artist and professor Molly Vaughan who helped her navigate the challenges of mastering the basic technical skills in drawing with a vision disability. Through that guided exploration, Tay found her niche in illustration. She finds inspiration through her curiosities of nature, cultural mythologies, and fairy tales. Tay’s art carries a theme of whimsy and child-like wonder often expressed with vibrant colors and line. She believes that creativity and joy are muscles that can become de-conditioned if not used often enough. Tay hopes to fan the flames of curiosity and imagination through her work.
